Nippon Power S2000

Photography and editorial by Nelson Queralta

The Honda S2000 is already a good handling, well balanced machine out the factory with a nearly perfect weight distribution. Basically the car was lacking one thing, power. While sometimes adding more HP to a vehicle may break that near perfect balance, the trick is to add the power, without sacrificing the vehicle’s handling characteristics. Knowledge and experience lends a helping hand in order to keep everything running smoothly.

Enter Robert Wong of Nippon Power, owner of this 02 AP1 gracing the pages of IntunedOnline. Don’t know what Nippon Power is? Let me give you a little sucka-free knowledge first. Nippon Power was one of the first online parts store back in the beginnings of the internet, it started as a home business…literally. Robert used to keep all his inventory at home and his living room was his “shipping department”. Eventually they moved into a warehouse because now they’re one of the largest east coast distributors for high-performance JDM and USDM parts, most of which are found on his super sick S2K. So it’s safe to say that Robert has been around the scene long enough to know a thing or two about tuning.

Starting with a Full Race turbo kit, a Garret GT3076R ball bearing turbo with a 0.63 A/R mated to HPC coated manifold was used to produce 431whp on a minimal 15psi. Excess exhaust fumes get kicked out through a Tial 44mm external wastegate along with excess amount of charge air getting pushed out by a Synapse Engineering BOV. To keep the F20C’s pistons from meeting their detonating death, a set of RC Engineering 750cc injectors were used in place of the stockies along with a Walbro 255lph fuel pump. All 431 ponies are synchronized by a stand alone AEM EMS, and an HKS Hi-Power sings to the tune of the throttle. ARC accessories were added, automatically giving the engine bay pimp status. An ACT Heavy Duty clutch is given the task of transferring all that power to the rear wheels along with an ACT Pro Lite flywheel.

Like I said earlier, balance, to keep the car on the road after adding all that punch under the hood, a set of KW Variant 3 coilovers were used to replace the stock body-roll inducing shock/spring combo. Volk Racing RE30s wheels wrapped with super sticky Yokohama S.drive rubber keep grip levels high. Even though the S2k already looks great out the box, it looks a lot better with a Seibon Mugen carbon fiber hard top. To keep the fiber going, a Seibon Mugen hood and rear wing were installed. A front OEM lip and AP2 headlight and taillight conversion finish off the looks department.

This is what some will call the perfect build, adding to the original formula without sacrificing the feel of the car. It’s the reason why we tune to begin with, to make the finishing product better and Nippon Power’s Honda S2000 is the perfect example. After the shoot Robert commented to me that the car was going to receive a couple of more upgrades in the upcoming year, can’t wait to see what’s coming up.
